Our story
Our customers have been saying yes for 5 generations
We’re a fifth-generation family-owned Tex-Mex food icon with home-grown roots in central Texas. Since the 1800’s our family has been proud to be part of the cultural fabric of Austin. The city we love is reflected in who we are, and in everything we do.
We’ve been stacking piping-hot enchiladas since 1954— we were getting Austin moving before I-35, and celebrating our sweet 16 when keeping Austin weird was just a way of life. With 65 years under our sombrero, El Patio is a unique and wild blend of flavors, people, and culture that could only harmonize here, in Austin.
Our cantina, located just off historic Guadalupe Street, has served college kids, presidents, and everyone in between. It’s poetically unpolished, feeling less “designed” and more lived — a family dining room layered with the fingerprints of generations. It’s a place full of stories, artifacts, heirlooms, and memories. Not fancy, but fantastic. Not fussy, but fussed over. Cultivated, cared for, and loved by thousands over many, many years. Funny enough, there’s no patio— but trust us, the margaritas make up for it.
So whether you’re picking up a jar of salsa or stopping by the restaurant to see for yourself, from our family to yours, enjoy!
Salsa is more than just a start to your meal at El Patio, it’s a symbol of craft and community.
It brings people together to share, laugh, sip, and snack. Our rich, rustic Medium red salsa — the original recipe since 1954 — is tomato-forward, with just enough jalapeño for punch, and a balanced mix of salt, lime, and garlic that’s bright and fresh.
We’re proud to find a place at your family table, to help celebrate traditions old and new, with fresh flavor and a dash of nostalgia to remind friends of a simpler time.
